On the morning of Friday, Oct. 30, witches on bicycles will roll through Santa Rosa Beach, Niceville, and Destin for the annual Witch Ride. The costumed riders pedal to local elementary schools to wave to students as they arrive for class, and every registration supports the Children’s Volunteer Health Network (CVHN). CVHN provides free dental, medical, and mental health care to uninsured and underinsured children in Walton and Okaloosa counties.
The tradition began in 2004, when a few South Walton friends traded their regular clothes for witch hats and rode to greet schoolchildren on Halloween morning. In 2009, it became a charity fundraiser for CVHN. Since then, the ride has expanded to three communities, and CVHN’s Mobile Dental Clinic has served more than 20,000 local children.
The Founders Ride, the original route, launches at 6:30 a.m. from the Stage at the Green in Gulf Place, 15 Laura Hamilton Blvd., in Santa Rosa Beach. Riders travel to Butler Elementary School and back, then gather from 8 to 10:30 a.m. for brunch at Shelby’s Beach Bar, 37 Town Center Loop.
The Bluewater Ride runs from 8 to 9 a.m., starting from the parking lot at 4550 E. Highway 20 in Niceville and stopping at Bluewater Elementary School. A brunch follows from 9 to 11:45 a.m. at 3rd Planet Brewery, 1400 E. John Sims Parkway.
The Destin Harbor Ride also runs from 8 to 9 a.m., starting at the Marler Street public parking lot (285 Harbor Blvd.) and stopping at Destin Elementary School. Its brunch runs from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Sky Bar at The Edge, 302 Harbor Blvd.
Each Gathering Brunch includes food, mimosas, music from DJ Dan, raffles, and prizes for the most witchy outfit, best broom decor, and loudest cackle. Riders who need a bike or want to volunteer can find details and register at witchride.com.
