picasso faces: playful Portraits in Cardboard art workshop at Frame gallery in sewanee, tenn., on July 25, 2026 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.

Frame Gallery Gifts & Art invites artists of all ages to explore the imaginative world of Pablo Picasso during "Picasso Faces: Playful Portraits in Cardboard," a hands-on workshop led by gallery owner and artist Harriet Runkle on Saturday, July 25, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Inspired by Picasso's abstract approach to portraiture, participants will discover how the artist transformed ordinary faces into expressive works of art by combining different viewpoints, bold shapes, and unexpected colors. Using colorful chalk, cardboard, and recycled custom framing materials, each participant will create a unique portrait full of personality and imagination.

"No artistic experience is needed," said Runkle. "This workshop is all about experimenting, having fun, and discovering that there isn't just one right way to make art."

Designed for all ability levels, this hands-on workshop offers a fun activity for adults, families, grandparents, and children who enjoy creating together. Every participant will leave with a finished artwork and a new appreciation for Picasso's innovative style.

The “Picasso Faces” workshop is part of Frame Gallery's growing lineup of creative community events, including the monthly Makers Market, where visitors can watch local artists demonstrate their craft, enjoy hands-on art activities, and discover unique handmade work. Together, these events celebrate creativity, encourage artistic exploration, and bring people of all ages together through art.

The workshop fee is $25 per adult and $15 per child under 12, who must be accompanied by an adult. The workshop fee includes all materials; space is limited to 8 participants to provide ample individual instruction, and advance registration is encouraged.

For those who want to continue creating at home, Picasso-inspired art kits will also be available for purchase at Frame Gallery. These take-home kits include everything needed to keep exploring playful portraits and creative collage using recycled materials.

If you need a little inspiration before class, browse examples of Picasso-inspired portraits and learn more about the artist through the Tate's kid-friendly educational resources.
